HDTV: How to Make the Most Out of It

If you own an HDTV, then you are lucky. You are one of the few who can take advantage of this amazing technology. With it, it is as if you are watching your favorite movie or television program right inside a theater. The images are clear and crisp, and the sound is very sharp.

However, it will definitely spoil all the fun when you realize that you are not getting what you have expected from an HDTV. For one, the image may not be clear at all. If you are having this trouble, then perhaps you need to do the following:4. Read the manual. There are a lot of features that are already included in your HDTV, and they can be used to efficiently adjust the quality of the images. If there are some instructions that are not clear to you, do not leave everything into your hands, or else, you may lose your warranty.2. Set the right brightness level. Another thing that you may want to adjust is the brightness of your television. If everything appears to be dark, you want to increase the brightness level; however, this is not completely advisable since you will also reduce the saturation of the color. The images will not be very vivid. It is also not a good idea to set the brightness level too low, because you will not be able to create the details of the shadows. You cannot also separate the dark from the light areas.1. Adjust the room lighting. You can definitely adjust the size of the screen, but you would be able to watch all your favorite shows and TV programs more effectively if you do so in a controlled lighting. Usually, people have the hobby of watching television when everything seems dark. In case you do not know, it will cause strain in your eyes, and you will develop headaches later on.What you can do is to avoid the light from directly reflecting into the screen. It will create glare, and it will make it more difficult for you to see the images very clearly. You can also make use of daylight bulbs, or place the light just behind the television. When you do so, you can have the rest of the room dark. You can solve the problem by simply choosing the best input device for your HDTV. You can ask for recommendation from the seller or from the service provider or manufacturer of the HDTV. You can also place a DVD into the letterbox bars. You can also determine if there is something wrong with the brightness level by looking into the eyes of the people on the screen. If their eyebrow appears to be more prominent and you can hardly see the eyes anymore, there is a huge chance that the level of brightness is too low.For you to be able to properly control the contrast level, you can watch a show or a movie that will take you to a sequence with a white object. To give you an example, you can watch Bruce Almighty and freeze the screen where you can see Morgan Freeman. He is dressed all white, but there are also other colored details around. Set the contrast level to its highest, and then slowly reduce it until you can clearly see all the details of the white object. Perhaps you want to see the buttons of his shirt or the linings of his pocket.3. Check the contrast level. Not a lot of HDTV buyers actually know that when you purchase the unit, the contrast level is set to the maximum. This is how the stores are able to showcase the vivid colors of the images, considering that the lights can be very strong. If you are not going to adjust it, though, there is a huge probability that you may suffer from eye strain, especially if you are going to watch the television in very dim rooms. It will also destroy the quality of your TV. You would also not reduce the contrast level too low, or you will also reduce the quality of the images on your television.

HDTV can provide you a real entertainment deal, but you will definitely learn to appreciate it more if you can set the colors right.

Seven HDTV Mistakes to Avoid

Here's the list of some common mistakes for buyers and owners of HDTV sets.

1. Keep chemicals away from TV, ammonia in Windex can damage coatings. Liquids sprayed on the screen can seep in between the bezel and panel and cause all kinds of problems. Best to use a damp cloth preferably not wood-based paper products like newspaper or paper towels which can create tiny scratches.4. Don't turn down a great deal on a 1080i TV. Even though we recommend buying a future-proofed 1080p TV, Bruce Berkoff of the LCDTV Association points out that it is difficult to tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p on a set capable of displaying all the pixels. He adds, "If a TV is rated at 1920 x 1080 resolution it shouldn't matter if the program is in 1080i or 1080p." Currently none of the programming coming in over the air, on cable, or satellite is 1080p. More so, you can't really tell the difference on anything smaller than a 37 inch TV or if you sit far enough away from a larger set.Now that you have some general idea of what to look for and what to avoid, the last step in finding the perfect TV set for your home is to read reviews. Good places to start are with known vendors like Vizio, Toshiba, and Samsung.5. Don't leave the brightness up too high. Many TVs ship with the brightness setting 21 in "showroom" mode. In a normally lit living room a lower brightness level is perfectly adequate and saves energy too. If you want to get the most out of your HDTV set, you should consider having it calibrated by an expert like someone from Geek Squad or do it yourself with a DVD like Digital Video Essentials.6. Don't get fooled into buying expensive add-ons from the salesperson at your local big box retailer. Most HDMI cables work just fine for most programming. The one reason to spend the extra money is for a high speed (Category 2) capable cable used for "Deep Color," and lossless audio.2. Don't buy a Plasma TV if you're going to be watching it in a brightly lit room with a lot of windows. Unlike LCD TVs plasma TVs have thick glass panels which can create lots of glare. On the other hand, don't be afraid of Plasma "burn-in" which was a more common problem on older Plasma TVs . Most of today's Plasma TVs have circuitry to prevent burn-in or ghosting.3. Don't pay too much attention to those formulas that use room size to determine screen size. Buy the biggest TV that fits with your furnishing. Also keep in mind if you don't have an upconverting receiver or upconverting DVD player, a lot of programming that comes from DVDs and standard def programming shows up on your screen with big black borders around it so a bigger TV might be better if you're going to be watching a lot of standard def programming.

Now that you have some general idea of what to look for and what to avoid, the last step in finding the perfect TV set for your home is to read reviews. Good places to start are with known vendors like Vizio, Toshiba, and Samsung.

Strategy Analytics: 3DTVs Will Command 56 Percent Price Premium for Early Adopters

BOSTON -- US consumers who expect to buy a 3DTV during the next year plan to spend 56 percent more than those buying a regular HDTV, according to the latest research from the Strategy Analytics Connected Home Devices service. The report, “3DTVs: Buying Intentions and Early Adopter Feedback,” finds that the average expected price of a 3DTV is $1224, compared to $785 for an HDTV. The research found slightly lower 3DTV price premiums in major European markets, ranging from 54 percent in France to 35 percent in Italy.

“There have been suggestions that consumers are not willing to pay more for 3DTVs,” notes Jia Wu, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics. “Strategy Analytics research casts doubt on this theory. Those who are thinking of buying the product attach significant additional value to a 3DTV relative to a regular HDTV.”Editor’s note: Strategy Analytics conducted an online survey, the 2011 ConsumerMetrix Survey fielded in July 2011. The sample consisted of n=2000 individuals in the US and n=2801 in Europe (France, Germany, Italy, UK) ages 15-74 years.About Strategy AnalyticsThis study also reports that 11.5 percent of consumers in the US are somewhat or very likely to purchase a 3DTV during the coming 12 months, compared to 9.0 percent in Germany and 6.9 percent in the UK.“3DTVs exhibit all the classic signs of an emerging market with early teething problems,” says David Mercer, Principal Analyst and the report author. “Potential customers still report concerns over the potential health impact of watching 3DTV, so the industry must continue to address the remaining barriers to widespread adoption and focus on delivering further enhancements to in-home 3D technology.”

Startup aims to keep parties rolling at home

Pop music blares from speakers overhead, tempting anyone within earshot to pick up an instrument for a game of Guitar Hero.

Location: Greenfield"This large market size means that many consumers embrace gaming as a core piece of their entertainment budget," Gartner's Fabrizio Biscotti said in a prepared statement. The concept got its start in Arizona in 2006, and today a handful of companies operate nationally. One of them, Rolling Video Games, opened a franchise in central Indiana this year.Game Guru's main competitors aren't other gaming providers, Bravard said, but entertainment options like inflatable play equipment and miniature golf. The Game Guru partners teamed up after meeting through the fitness industry when both men owned health clubs.Game Guru is targeting a broad market. According to the Entertainment Software Association trade group, U.S. video game revenue totaled $25.1 billion in 2010. Worldwide video game revenue is expected to reach $112.1 billion by 2015, according to a July study published by technology research firm Gartner.Bravard and Carter spent about a year working to launch Game Guru, one of a growing number of mobile entertainment businesses centered on video game trailers. The partners financed about $100,000 in startup costs themselves and hope eventually to have multiple trailers each doing 20-30 events per month.One-year goal: $75,000 to $150,000 revenue per outletThey already had shifted gears when they discovered the franchised operations elsewhere. But rather than be discouraged, they studied the others in hopes of setting Game Guru apart.Bravard said the company's prices - starting at $199 for an hour rental - are in line with other party options.Bravard started what is now Hancock Wellness Center shortly after graduating from Greenfield-Central High School in 1987. He later sold the club to Hancock Regional Hospital. He also has owned a martial arts school, a home-based gold-buying business and an auction house.Austin, Texas-based Games2U, which claims $20 million in annual revenue and more than 70 franchises, has been listed on Entrepreneur magazine's Franchise 500 list.Game Guru is independently owned, but the partners eventually hope to sell decked-out trailers and offer business support to other entrepreneurs - without the ongoing fees franchisors charge.By using networked modern video game systems, Game Guru gives players the chance to face their competition, too. Bravard encourages clients to select multiplayer games so all attendees can be involved."We had 2,000 kids and adults go through this," Bravard said of a recent event. "Moms and dads were gaming right along with their children. A lot of parents had never played the game before."Website: www.gameguru2u.com"Most of the rental companies drop the stuff off and don't have the service. We're sending an attendant to do everything for you," he said. "We're there to set everything up ... and make sure everybody's involved."Bravard learned the value of satisfied customers early in his entrepreneurial career.Phone: (888) 454-4105She said nearly all her guests asked for a Game Guru business card.Source: Rick Bravard"Definitely, there is a trend toward multiplayer games in the industry right now," said Jesse Schell, an assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University who is also a video game developer.Several types of video-game controllers are lined up like soldiers in front of four 51-inch HDTV monitors, ready for the battle to be waged from the 25-foot-long couch along the opposite wall."Some of the other companies out there ... they have the equipment costs, a franchise fee and royalty fees every month," Bravard said. "That can bite into your bottom line real quick."Service: mobile gaming/entertainmentThese days, they're hauling the electronics-laden trailer to about 10 events each month, doing both private parties and public events such as the Fishers Freedom Festival and the Indianapolis 500 Community Day."Realistically, the most reasonable way to use video games for corporate team building is if there can be simulations of situations that teams would need to solve together," Schell said. "A team is only meaningful in the context of solving a problem or achieving a goal. Multiplayer simulations of problem-solving situations can be a great help for teams in some cases.""You can learn a lot from your competition," Bravard said. "You can do it better. You have to believe in yourself."Gaming aficionados themselves, Bravard and Carter came up with the idea of a mobile video game arcade but encountered some challenges: stand-alone video games are too bulky and too fragile, and arcade game play is largely solo.Even so, marketing and brand awareness is a challenge for any startup. Game Guru has relied primarily on social media and client referrals.Founded: 2011"You start getting those referrals and recommendations from people - that's what makes all the difference," he said. "You can advertise all you want, and you can get some interest. There's nothing in the world like a business that comes from a referral from a happy customer."Private parties are a big part of the niche, but Bravard said he is seeing an increase in business events, with team-building games such as "capture-the-flag" contests being popular.Carter is based in Lexington, Ky., but Game Guru operates only in central Indiana for now.Founders/owners: Rick Bravard, Daren CarterAnnual operating costs include vehicle maintenance, fuel and software. Bravard keeps about 300 game titles active across three platforms: Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii.Each of the televisions is hooked up to three different video game systems. Other amusement options include mobile laser tag, human bumper balls - huge bubbles that expose only a person's feet - sumo wrestling suits and a prize cannon.During events, staffers take photos and post a slide show in the trailer. They also allow attendees to put the photos on Facebook, further expanding their reach.Employees: one full timeFrom the outside, Game Guru 2 U's workspace looks to be a humble racing trailer. But inside, it's an entertainment experience - exactly what co-owner Rick Bravard was aiming for when he and partner Daren Carter launched Greenfield-based Game Guru 2 U in April.Game Guru 2 UE-mail: rick@gameguru2u.com

The Coming Age Of HDTV - What Does It Mean To Me?

HDTV - high-definition television: it is something that has been discussed for some time now, however not everyone has a strong sense of what it is and why he or she would want to have it.

Fortunately, this transition will be a bit quicker than the conversion from black-and-white to color. Under the FCC rules for the transition to digital television, television manufacturers were required to include a digital tuner in all television sets manufactured after March 1, 2006.If you have any lingering doubts about the better HDTV standard, all you need to do is to visit your local television store and see for yourself just how awesome of a picture HDTV actually produces. Just as Dolby Digital Surround Sound enables the listener to feel as if they are in the middle of the action on the television, HDTV permits the viewer to feel as if they are standing in the same room as the actors, on the sidelines at the football game, or on the same beach as the models - it really is that good of a picture.1. Lines Of Resolution* HDTV - 1080 Lines of ResolutionIn 1998, when the first HDTV's became available to the buying public, the Headline News newscasters were joking that with the rollout of HDTV, we the audience would be able to see every blackhead and blemish on their faces. Of course, they were probably correct in that assumption. The detail of the HDTV-signal is absolutely amazing.Because all television stations will be required to broadcast a digital signal after February 17, 2009, many viewers are beginning to ask a lot more questions about how the new digital age of television will affect their personal viewing experience. They want to know whether or not their television set will be compatible, whether or not they will have to replace it, and what steps they will have to take in order to keep watching their favorite shows. Here are the standard television resolutions:* EDTV - 720 Lines of ResolutionAlthough color-technology was first introduced to audiences with the release of The Wizard Of Oz in 1939, color television did not become mainstream until the late-1960's. And although the technology of color was mainstream, black-and-white televisions were still being manufactured and sold well into the 1980's.How To Identify If Your Television Is An Analog TVAlthough it will be possible to convert the digital television signal to analog, you will lose the extra picture detail on the conversion. So, if you stick with your analog television, you will be restricting yourself to the quality of picture you are currently receiving, even after the change in television broadcasting formats is complete. While Americans were busy playing with building the computer industry, the Japanese were hard at work trying to build a better television set. The first HDTV systems developed by the Japanese still relied on the old analog system of sending a broadcast signal to their televisions, but they were still able to produce a better television viewing experience.Researchers soon understood that they would need to push at least part of the television signal in a digital format to make sure that HDTV could be transmitted within the limits currently allotted to the television broadcasters. By the time they had finished their work, the Grand Alliance had created a system that was 100% Digital. Will My Analog Television Stop Working In 2009?In 1995, after considerable opposition from the television broadcast industry, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission officially set the standard for completely digital HDTV broadcasting system. This put into motion the events that are just now coming to fruition, with the rollout of the new Digital Television broadcasting system.1. Subscribe to a cable television service (and use their digital television converter);2. Subscribe to a satellite television service (and use their digital television converter); or* VCR's - 240 Lines of ResolutionOther broadcasters like PBS opted for the higher 1080 format. Good for them. The simple answer is "yes", but that does not mean that you will have to buy a new television in order to get the new digital broadcasts. While you may not need to replace your television set, you may have to make changes in how you get your television signal. In 1993, a consortium of American researchers and manufacturers (known as The Grand Alliance) joined forces to find a way to bring HDTV-quality to the American public, while keeping the bandwidth requirements of broadcasters within the existing limits.2. Aspect RatioWhile it is true that you do not need to upgrade your television from the analog format to the new digital format, you might seriously consider doing so anyway.3. Sound QualityIn a standard analog television, the Aspect Ratio is a 4-by-3, which nearly looks square. The 4-by-3 ratio means that it can be measured 4-parts wide to 3-parts high.Another factor connected to the new HDTV-format is the Aspect Ratio. When initially introduced to the U.S. Government, the new HDTV system produced a myriad of concerns, which included the issue of an analog HDTV-system needing more bandwidth than what was currently allotted to the television broadcasters.* DVD's - 480 Lines of ResolutionTelevision technology took a big leap in the 1960's with the transition from television tubes to circuit boards, but that conversion failed to bring with it any major strides in the quality of the television picture. The third factor connected to the new HDTV-format is Sound Quality. In fact, most HDTV programming will carry with it Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound, as frequently heard on DVD's. So long as you have a surround sound unit attached to your television set, the surround sound will enable to the television viewer to be immersed in the sound, so much so as it often feels as if you are in the middle of the action happening on your television set.If your current television does not have a logo on its front that indicates DTV (Digital TV), EDTV (Enhanced Definition TV), or HDTV, then your television set is an analog TV.When the Japanese rolled out HDTV on the Japanese mainland, the lines of resolution numbered 1080. To put this into perspective, the standard analog TV signal exhibits 330 lines of resolution. This makes it more than clear that the original analog HDTV format really was a real issue for television broadcasters in the United States. To produce a resolution of 1080 lines on a system designed for 330 lines would have literally required three times the bandwidth of the current analog system.Analog television has been with us since the inception of television broadcasting. Analog is the old way of processing a television signal.Although most television stations have been broadcasting a Digital Television Signal now for a few years, analog television owners have been none the wiser. But that will all change on February 17, 2009.There are in fact three ways that the average consumer can continue to get a television signal using their old television set:This conversion is much like the transition from AM to FM as the standard listening medium in the radio industry. Radio listeners could not listen to FM stations until which time they had upgraded their radio from AM to the AM/FM format. The same thing will happen here as well. If you want to receive the beautiful, high-quality HDTV images, you will need to upgrade to a television set capable of displaying the HDTV images. The newer digital technology is all about Lines Of Resolution. With more lines of resolution, the viewer will receive more image information, therefore bringing the viewer much more picture clarity and detail.Understanding The Transition From An Analog Signal To The New Digital Signal* Analog Television - 330 Lines of ResolutionNow that we are quickly approaching the end of the analog-television era, the cost of HDTV television sets has fallen considerably. Whereas five years ago, the average HDTV cost in the range of $3-4,000, the cost of most HDTV's has fallen to under $1200 today. After February 17, 2009, the cost of HDTV should drop again, making it much more affordable to the general public.Understanding The Three Facets Of The New Digital TechnologyDigital image processing is a technology that began in earnest during the 1970's, when Japanese technology companies began to explore the concepts of HDTV. The Japanese TV manufacturers were exploring ways to improve the picture quality of the television image, as a way to find more customers for their television products. With the new HDTV format, the Aspect Ratio has been changed to the same format seen in the movie theatre - a 16-by-9 Aspect Ratio, or 16-parts wide to 9-parts high.3. Buy a DTV converter (Digital TV Converter) to receive signals from your analog antenna and to convert that signal back to analog, so that you can continue to use your analog television. (If you receive your television signal over-the-air, the Federal Government has implemented a Coupon Program to help consumers offset the cost of the DTV converter boxes: http://www.ntia.doc.gov/dtvcoupon/index.html )There is a caveat to this chart though. The minimum requirement of the FCC is that broadcasters must produce a minimum of 720 Lines of Resolution. As a result, some broadcasters like ABC chose the 720-resolution, and yet they can still legally call their programming standard, HDTV.

If you have any lingering doubts about the better HDTV standard, all you need to do is to visit your local television store and see for yourself just how awesome of a picture HDTV actually produces. Just as Dolby Digital Surround Sound enables the listener to feel as if they are in the middle of the action on the television, HDTV permits the viewer to feel as if they are standing in the same room as the actors, on the sidelines at the football game, or on the same beach as the models - it really is that good of a picture.

My Review Of "Planet Earth" On My HDTV

We just bought a Blue ray HD DVD player for our HDTV. After we got it hooked up, which took a while... I, for some reason or another just realized that I did not have any HD movies for me to watch on it. Well I already knew which one I wanted to see first and that was Planet Earth. So I got on the internet and purchased it from an online store.

Of course on our HDTV it looks as good as it possibly can but it gives you a feeling of how small the Earth really is but at the same time when it talks about some of the environments it feels that the world is very large. When you are watching Planet Earth you may get to an environment that they begin to talk about that just looks alien to you. Some of the things that are in the environment look as if it was not real and you can not even imagine about being in some of these places in real life.In the beginning of it, it shows Angel falls... the highest water fall in the world. Then it starts to break off from there and shows the extraordinary animals that live in the freshwater environment. Another thing Planet Earth does is how well it shows the over view of the land. Some shots are taken in high Earth altitudes while others are from space showing the landscape and everything around it. The space shots are also one of my favorite things to look at.The bad thing though is that I had to wait three days; however I did save myself around twenty dollars, so it was worth the wait. So it came with multiple disks with around three to four episodes of Planet Earth on each of the disks. If you did not know already each episode of Planet Earth is one hour long. So once I put in Planet Earth to view on our HDTV I went to the menu of the first disk for the first episode. As you can imagine it was quite amazing how well the picture looked. All of the landscapes were full as can be in color and the animals looked as if they were flowing across the screen as they moved. I was impressed also on how well Planet Earth was filmed with a HDTV camera. Some of the animals they film in the movie looks as if they are right there next to them and the animals are not even being disturbed by them being around. It is truly the most amazing documentary of its type. One episode that really impressed me is the freshwater one.

One that really shows what I am talking about is the caves episode. Basically what it shows you is the underground world of Earth. How things form under the surface and the weird little creatures that inhabit the caves. It is truly something that will be hard for most people living on the planet Earth to believe once they have seen some of the amazing animals that live on it. This documentary is truly amazing especially if viewed on a HDTV!
